Smells Like San Francisco Spirit to Me

Are Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco Values coming to Solvang?

Did you hear that Nancy Pelosi is running for office again in San Francisco? Her reason for doing so? She has simply not finished the job yet…

"Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery," — Nancy Pelosi, September 8, 2023

Yes, San Francisco values are what we need more of now. Indeed. Businesses shuttered. Rampant crime. Drug-addled "citizens” enjoying government assisted suicide on filthy, unsafe streets. Even Nordstrom’s had to skedaddle. Related news item “Nordstrom’s leaving downtown San Francisco” available here.

Below are a couple of Nancy’s constituents who I”m sure wish she would simply, “Go. Away. Now.”

These folks have been fighting her insane policies for years. If given the chance, I’d join them in saying “Nancy, please take your 80 something year- old self off to the nearest salon and facelift joint and stop destroying the once magical city by the bay! And take Gavin with you too.”

San Francisco - a model of government success and citizen empowerment!
But, be ready fellow Santa Ynez Valley residents, it smells like that San Francisco spirit is coming to a town near you soon. Perhaps even to the charming Danish town of Solvang.

In the Solvang City Council meeting of September 11, 2023 the issue of the homeless was tabled - read the article here in the Santa Maria Times

Tabled? Kicked down the road? Checkmated?

If you don’t have time to read Ms. Best’s above article in its entirety, thankfully, Solvang city attorney Fleischman explained the “predicament” in a nutshell:

“If someone wants to set up a homeless encampment on Mission Drive right now, we don’t have the tools to move it away. I’ll say it again: We do not have those tools right now. Our ordinance does not stand the test of the Constitution in my view, and if we were to use our existing ordinance, we would likely have a civil rights violation against the city,” Fleishman said.

What’s to prevent sidewalk tent cities along Atterdag or Copenhagen? Seems like only a relocation program or a robust homeless shelter program. The former, suggested by a city council attendee and resident of Solvang — bus them to some other community like Lompoc or Santa Maria where they have the services in place… the latter not a funded nor voted for option. Regarding relocation, that resident has a point - thanks to a February 2023 unanimous vote by our County Board of Supervisors, Santa Maria has been blessed with Hope Village to shelter the unhoused. See the Noozhawk article here. So maybe the answer is to we pull an Abbot or a DeSantis move on our fellow county citizens? Not a very good or fair option, right?

So, checkmated is the answer I think, thanks to Nancy and her ilk.

If you build it, they will come. And they are coming in record numbers thanks to the Biden administrations’ border (voter hoarder?) policies.

And when they come, they will exceed the available resources of lovely places like our Solvang, and nothing can be done if they want to pitch a tent or a cot or a fit on Mission if they like.

Better get yourself to a City Council meeting soon to express your distaste for San Francisco/Sacramento stench. Solvang City Council Meetings Or, write your county supervisor and express your concerns.

Sniff. Sniff. Yup, smells like San Francisco spirit to me.
